What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are a treatment that will gently and safely improve acne and breakouts, skin hydration, sun damaged skin and lines and wrinkles. Our chemical peels are from the Aspect Dr skincare and Cosmedix skincare ranges. Results will be seen quickly and without downtime.
The perfect peel for your skin condition will be chosen by our therapists. The goal is a brighter, healthier complexion. Chemical peels can effectively diminish the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, blemishes and more with little to no trauma to healthy skin cells.
We are specialists in skin health.

Why should you get a chemical peel?

Here, you will find 10 reasons why you should get a chemical peel treatment. Peels can:
1. Improve the texture of your skin
2. Increase the cell turnover rate of your skin
3. Help your skin produce more collagen
4. Reduce fine lines
5. Decrease hyperpigmentation
6. Unclog pores and help clear up acne
7. Leave your skin smooth
8. Make your skin look more even-toned
9. Make your skin look dewy
10. Improve minor scarring.

What does a Glow Facial do?

Facials aid in the appearance and texture of your skin. Our Glow facial includes a microdermabrasion treatment to gently remove dead skin cells from the surface, without any harsh acids. We then use a fruit enzyme mask to complete your treatment. This allows your skin to improve in health and bring out a radiant glow. This treatment is perfect for young and older skins, as well as those that are pregnant or breast feeding. It is a gentle treatment, but yields results in a holistic way.
A Glow facial can be undertaken before an event, as there is no downtime. Taking only 45 mins, it is perfect for women and men in Balwyn, Kew and surrounding suburbs.

What types of chemical peels are there?

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure. Depending on the issues you're addressing with the procedure, you'll choose a chemical peel in one of three depths:
Light chemical peel. A light (superficial) chemical peel removes the outer layer of skin. It's used to treat fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. You might have a light peel every two to four weeks.
Medium chemical peel. A medium chemical peel removes skin cells from the top and middle layers of skin. It's used to treat wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone.
Deeper chemical peel. A deeper chemical peel removes skin cells even deeper, but there is some downtime.

How do I know which peel I need?

We will guide you based on your skin type, your skin health and the level of correction your skin needs.

Most people start with the Aspect Lactic Peel, before moving to deeper peels that offer higher levels of correction, but also more flaking afterwards. If your skin is super sensitive, a Glow Facial might also be a great introduction for you.

Darker skin Types are best suited to the Aspect Power peel and Prescription Vitamin A peel, as they do not produce heat in the skin. It is very important that you follow advice about skincare before and after your peel to minimise any potential complications and improve your skin health and healing.

How do you prepare for a chemical peel?

At least 2-4 weeks before your peel, you should commence using corrective skincare. This is important to prevent pigmentation, speed up healing and reduce unwanted risks.

Skincare you should use everyday before a peel should include:
1. A Pigment inhibitor, such as Aspect Dr Complete Pigment Plus or Cosmedix Elite X-cell+
2. Retinol product to improve skin turnover, such as Aspect Dr Exfol A or Cosmedix Define or Cosmedix Refine
3. Sunscreen, such as Aspect Face SPF50

Do not undertake any waxing, facials, electrolysis, laser or sun exposure for 1-2 weeks before your peel.

What happens after a peel?

It is very important that you carefully follow the advice of your practitioner, following a peel treatment, to help improve the benefit of the procedure and reduce the risk of complications or side effects.

As the chemical peel penetrates deeper layers of skin, you may experience skin tightness and peeling afterwards.

Do not scratch or pick at your skin as doing this may result in permanent scarring. The peeling skin is a barrier. Your aim is to take care of it, not remove it!

To help avoid infection, follow your practitioner's advice regarding hygiene, including washing your face gently with a mild cleanser and not wearing make-up.

Ensure you wear a high SPF sunscreen during the course of your treatment and for 4 weeks after. Avoid any direct sun exposure for 6 weeks.

Only use the skincare products advised by your practitioner.

Do not have any other facial treatments for at least 1 week after the peel.

What are the risks of a peel?

Your face may swell slightly following a medium-depth peel and your skin may turn dark brown with white streaks. Following this, the skin will peel over 5-7 days, during which time it may be itchy, tight and easily irritated.

Once the skin has peeled, fresh, bright red skin will appear. This will fade to your normal skin tone over 3-6 weeks. Sometimes, skin redness persists for longer periods, but this also usually disappears in time.

Hyperpigmentation (brown spots on skin) may occur with all peels. To reduce the chance of this, apply high factor sunscreen daily and avoid direct sun exposure for 6 weeks post peel.

If you are susceptible to cold sores, you may find you have an outbreak after a chemical peel. To help prevent this, taking a course of antiviral medicine beforehand may be advised by your practitioner.
